For the past several years, Carly Edmundson has celebrated Galentine’s Day, a day dedicated to strong female friendships and empowering women. This year, she decided to do something different to mark the occasion: raising funds for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
“Galentine’s Day has always been something I’ve recognized because the incredible women in my life mean a lot to me,” says Carly. “I’ve hosted parties in the past, but during the pandemic, parties weren’t possible. Instead, I started celebrating Galentine’s Day through a different lens, encouraging all of the women that I know to contribute to a cause or organization that empowers women.”
Carly felt the Museum was a natural fit for her Galentine’s Day celebrations: “With some of the headlines we are confronted with, it’s important to reflect on lessons learned – particularly about hard-fought women’s rights and celebrating women’s contributions throughout history.”
“Also, the Museum is led by a number of incredible and inspiring women that I’ve had the chance to meet and collaborate with in my career,” she adds.
Together, Carly and her “Galentines” raised $1,000.00 for the Museum! Their generous donations will help ensure stories of courage and resilience are available for all to learn from.
When Carly heard the total amount raised, she said she was thrilled but not necessarily surprised. “In my experience, women always show up and invest in the community around them wherever they can. I am fortunate to have so many people around me who are both generous and driven to make an impact.”
Overall, the fundraiser was a positive experience for Carly, especially with the support of Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. “They set up a dedicated donation page for my fundraiser and gave me updates on how the progress was going,” says Carly. “They were also cheerleaders who celebrated the results, and it made the whole experience even more ‘warm and fuzzy’.”
