Before she participated in the Be an Upstander program, Abrielle wasn’t familiar with some human rights concepts. “No one really talks about freedom of speech,” says the Grade 5 student. “I did not know that one in three people do not have access to freedom of speech around the world.”
But thanks to you, everything changed for Abrielle. This spring, she was able to take part in the Be an Upstander program. Through your support, she learned how to recognize injustice around her. She also identified her own strengths, and how she could use those strengths to create change.
Abrielle’s school chose to take part in the Be an Upstander program to give their students an opportunity to learn about human rights. They also wanted to bring out their passion for justice. For Abrielle, this passion is freedom of speech. “I chose this topic because I’m a very talkative person,” says Abrielle. “I love sharing my ideas with everyone.”
Because of your generous support, that’s exactly what Abrielle is now able to do. For her project, she researched countries around the world where freedom of speech is restricted.
Through the program, she also learned about different people who used their voices to take a stand for human rights. Abrielle was encouraged by Malala Yousafzai, who spoke out for girls’ right to go to school.
“I think freedom of speech is important because everyone should have the right to share their opinions,” says Abrielle.
Abrielle also says that her experience with the program has changed her perspective.
After participating in the Be an Upstander program, Abrielle decided that she will treat her classmates differently in the future. Abrielle plans to listen to what other people have to say and share her own ideas too.
She left us with this advice: “It’s important to include people and to give everyone a chance to share their ideas. Do everything in your power that you’re capable of.” Just imagine what the world will be like with more kids like Abrielle learning how they can take a stand for human rights, thanks to you!
